The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
By studying mathematics, students develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical concepts and their use within the classroom and beyond.
The syllabus consists of the following strands:
Each year, Abbotsford PS enters the Australasian Problem-Solving Maths Olympiad. A team of 30 Stage 2 students are entered into the Maths Games competition (under the guidance of Mrs Boyle) and a team of 35 Stage 3 students are entered into the Junior Division of the Maths Olympiad competition (under the guidance of Mr Hull).
In 2019, the Stage 3 team finished in 22nd place out of 1600 teams in Australia and New Zealand earning an Outstanding Achievement Shield. 13 students finished in the top 10% of the nation while six students managed to finish in the top 2%.
Both teams meet once a week to learn and discuss various strategies to solve mathematical problems. Five Olympiads (of 5 questions) are contested between March and September which are completed individually in 30 minutes.
At the same time as the weekly sessions, other students not competing in the Maths Olympiad or Maths Games develop problem-solving skills in like-ability maths groups.

We choose to recognise the Wangal People of the Eora Nation as the true owners of the land on which we stand: of the sky above and of the water that surrounds us. We thank the Elders, both of the past and the present, who are the traditional custodians of this country and we promise to care for the land and respect it as they have done. As we play and learn together, we extend that respect to all Aboriginal people here today.
