EAL/D
The EAL/D (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) program at Abbotsford Public School is tailored to provide support to newly-arrived students in Australia who are beginning to learn English. It also provides support to Australian born students from non-English speaking backgrounds who require specific assistance in accessing the content of the Australian curriculum.
The students are closely monitored and their needs are assessed through the EAL/D specialist teacher and the school's Wellbeing team.
EAL/D students are supported across the school through EAL/D teacher time with Mrs Ilias and Mrs Vadala. This includes in-class and withdrawal support.
The program includes the following:
- EAL/D students and classroom teachers are supported with intensive English lessons, in-class support, professional learning and team-teaching opportunities.
- 'New Arrival' students are provided intensive English language support.
- 'New Arrival' students approaching high school age are supported in applying for Intensive English classes at IEC High Schools.
- Student progress in reading data is tracked byEAL/D and LaST teachers on a regular basis.
