Creative arts

Creative arts is mandatory for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts where they learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform.

Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Music

Music is a vital part of life, including life at school. Given the right opportunities, children's early fascination with music can develop into a lifelong enthusiastic involvement in musical activities.

It is generally accepted that all children have the right to music education. All have their own unique instruments – the voice! Whilst music has intrinsic value, it also contributes to children's development in many areas. Skills include aural, oral, communication, memory and performance. Social skills, such as self-confidence and self-esteem, are encouraged through group activities.

Class Lessons

A specialist music teacher is at APS all week and teaches each class from K–6 in a classroom dedicated to music.  This room is well-equipped with a wide variety of instruments.

Choir

The school has two choirs that rehearse weekly and perform regularly at school events throughout the year.  The choirs include children from K-2 (Junior Choir) and 3-6. (Senior Choir).

Instrumental Tuition

This is provided by music tutors before or after school. Tuition on the school grounds is offered in the following: drums/percussion, recorders, saxophone, clarinet, violin, viola and piano. Tuition is organised directly with the tutors. Click here for further information on our P&C Music Program and Instrumental Tuition.

Dance

Students participate in Dance activities as part of the K-6 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education key learning area. Students regularly give dance displays as part of open events throughout the year.

Students from Year 3-6 are able to join a Dance Group taught by teachers with expertise in Dance.

The Dance Groups perform in arts festivals and at school events and have proven to be a great source of enjoyment for all those who watch.

Visual Arts

The school has an extensive Visual Arts program which is embedded across other KLAs. Each year, four artworks are selected for entry into The Arts Unit's Operation Art competition where pieces are selected to be displayed in hospitals and government offices across NSW.

The school's Visual Arts program includes the creation of artworks in a variety of media, with 2D and 3D applications. The program also includes the study of famous artists and the techniques they used. Every two years, students take part in two workshops run by Kris Taylor from Ceramics in Schools. They make and glaze a ceramics artwork to take home or contribute to a school mural.

Art Club

The Abbotsford PS Art Club is held every Wednesday afternoon for Advanced students in Term 1 & Term 3 and Term 2 & Term 4 for Beginning students. The club is instructed by Ms Susanne Thiebe who teaches the students a variety of art methods and media.

Drama

Drama Group, for K-2 students, meets each Monday lunchtime in the school hall at 1 o'clock. Games are a great way to establish relationships and develop positive group dynamics. We are working on increasing self-confidence, breaking down inhibitions and promoting imaginative responses. The drama activities are encouraging concentration and logical thinking while building trust and intuition.
