Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Weekly PDH Lessons

Students take part in weekly PDH lessons with their classroom teacher as outlined in the term programs below.

  • Term 1 - Social Skills and Foster Buddies
  • Term 2 - Child Protection
  • Term 3 - Peer Support (K-6) + Road Safety (K-4) / Growth & Development (5-6)
  • Term 4 - Drug Education

Weekly PE Lessons

Abbotsford Public School ensures that all students participate in 60 minutes of physical activity each week.

  • Kindergarten students engage in a weekly lesson with classroom teachers who focus on fundamental movement skills.
  • Stage 1 students engage in a weekly lesson with classroom teachers who focus on fundamental movement skills and an introduction to sports.
  • Stage 2 and 3 students engage in a weekly lesson with classroom teachers who focus on consolidation and application of FM skills through modified sports and games.

Friday PSSA

Abbotsford Public School offers a variety of winter and summer sports as part of the Inner West PSSA Zone. Each Friday, students catch a bus or walk to a park in the local area and play another school in the sport that they were selected in.

Winter Sports

  • Boys Football (Soccer)
  • Girls Football (Soccer)
  • Boys Touch Football
  • Girls Touch Football
  • Mixed Netball

Summer Sports

  • Boys T-Ball/Softball
  • Girls T-Ball/Softball

Before each season begins, coaches hold tryouts to determine team selection. Students are encouraged to try out even if they don’t play the sport outside of school.

Each coach holds weekly training sessions before school or during lunchtime to build students’ skills and confidence.

The APS PSSA Selection Policy can be found here.

Friday School Sports Program

Stage 2 and 3 students not attending PSSA will be a part of the Friday School Sports Program. This runs on Friday middle and afternoon sessions and students participate in a range of sports that help students to develop skills and encourage them to try out for a PSSA team the following year.

Representative PSSA Pathway

PSSA offers High Potential Gifted Education (HGPE) Stage 3 students the opportunity to excel in their chosen sport. Students may be invited to trial for a zone team to compete at a Sydney East Carnival. From there they may be invited to participate in a regional team to compete at a state carnival. At Abbotsford PS, we regularly have students selected into teams at a zone, regional and state level.

Trials are held for the following sports:

  • AFL
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Football (Soccer)
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Rugby League
  • Rugby Union
  • Softball
  • Tennis
  • Touch Football

More information on zone and regional sports trials can be found on the website below.

School Carnivals

Abbotsford Public School holds a 3-6 Swimming Carnival, a 3-6 Cross Country Carnival and a 3-6 Athletics Carnival each year. All students in Years 3 to 6 attend each carnival and students turning 8 years old in Year 2 may attend to compete if they chose to.

Students who finish in the top 3 for each event receive a ribbon and are invited to attend the zone carnival if they meet the criteria. If they meet qualification requirements, students may progress further to regional, state and national championships.

At the end of Term 1, all students in Stage 1 participate in a Fun Run on the same day as the 3-6 Cross Country Carnival. In Term 3, Kindergarten join Stage 1 for a K-2 Athletics Carnival on the same day as the 3-6 carnival.

Parents are invited to attend all carnivals.

Every student at Abbotsford Public School is placed into a sports house and sports house captains from Year 6 are elected each year.

Our sports houses are:

  • Emus (red)
  • Kookaburras (blue)
  • Lyrebirds (green & yellow)
  • Magpies (black & white)
